Political Director Jānis Mažeiks in Helsinki stresses the importance of transatlantic relations for Europe’s security

On 9–10 July 2019, the Under Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Political Director Jānis Mažeiks took part in the informal meeting of the European Union (EU) Political Directors in Helsinki, Finland. The Political Directors met with the United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, David Hale, to discuss the EU-US relationship, cooperation between the EU and NATO, and relations with Russia and China.

At the meeting, Jānis Mažeiks underlined that transatlantic unity and close cooperation with the United States were vital for security in Europe and across the globe. Jānis Mažeiks also pointed out that developing of cooperation between the EU and NATO was one of Latvia’s priorities, and coordinated efforts by the EU and NATO contributed significantly to the strengthening of security. In discussions on China the Political Director noted that it was essential that balance be found between economic and security interests.  

In the context of relations with Russia, Jānis Mažeiks stressed that it was vital to continue the fight against disinformation and to work on resilience-promoting measures.

The Political Directors also shared views on the effectiveness of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and discussed developments in the Middle East and the Arctic.
