On 9 July 2019, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, met with the Minister of State for Europe at the German Federal Foreign Office, Michael Roth. The meeting addressed the issue of the EU Multiannual Budget Framework for 2021–2027. The parties were unanimous that the negotiations among the Member States were entering the active phase.

“Latvia supports the reaching of an agreement on the EU Multiannual Financial Framework before the end of this year. We are of the same opinion with Germany on this issue,” the Parliamentary Secretary said. “At the same time, it is vital that an optimal balance is found in the budget between the new priorities and well-functioning traditional policies. It is important for Latvia that the new budget ensures sufficient funding for the convergence of socio-economic differences between EU Member States and regions,” Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica pointed out.

The officials also discussed the topic of the future of the Common Agricultural Policy. Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica underlined that Latvian farmers expected the long-exiting inequality concerning direct payments to be reduced during the next planning period.

The Latvian and German officials also talked about the Rail Baltica project, financing for innovations and science, as well as climate and security-related matters.
