On 9 July 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, received a farewell visit from the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Denmark, Hans Brask.

The Foreign Minister thanked the Ambassador for his efforts of strengthening the relationship between Latvia and Denmark. During the Ambassador’s tenure since 2015, several exchange visits have taken place, including that of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary to mark Latvia’s Centenary. The Ambassador has made visits to several Latvian cities and regions with the aim of facilitating economic cooperation. His contribution to the cultural sector deserves a special mention, for instance, the development of the creative industries’ business incubator, TabFab, launched with support from Denmark. The Ambassador has also initiated two historical studies: on the role of Denmark in the restoration of Latvia’s independence; and on Danish volunteer soldiers in the Latvian War of Independence.

In July this year, Denmark took over from Latvia the presidency of the Council of the Baltic Sea States. The Minister underlined that he highly appreciated the format as a platform for practical regional cooperation in addressing highly important issues such as climate, organised crime, and education, as well as engaging with countries close to the region, for instance, Belarus.

The diplomats were unanimous that the region’s resilience and security should be strengthened further. The Foreign Minister highlighted Denmark’s active contribution to collective defence measures in the region, and he commended the joint Latvian and Danish initiative – the establishment of NATO’s Multinational Division Headquarters North.
