On 9 July 2019, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, will be on a visit to Berlin to discuss issues related to the EU Multiannual Budget Framework with the Minister of State for Europe at the German Federal Foreign Office, Michael Roth.
The meeting between Latvian and German officials is taking place against the backdrop of the increasingly intensive negotiations on the EU’s Multiannual Budget Framework, EU heads of state and government being resolved to complete, by the end of this year, the talks on financing for the next budgetary period.
Germany being the largest contributor to the EU budget, the position of the country will play a crucial part in the negotiations. The meeting is taking place at the initiative of Latvia with the aim of spelling out in detail Latvia’s interests concerning the EU Multiannual Financial Framework.
Michael Roth represents Germany at the EU General Affairs Council meeting, which is the key format for talks on the Union’s multiannual budget. The final decision will be made by EU heads of state and government at the European Council.
