On 11 June 2019, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, me with a delegation from the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Slovakia, headed by the committee chairperson, Katarína Cséfalvayová, for a discussion on the bilateral relations between Latvia and Slovakia, security policy and strategic communication, and priorities for the EU’s new institutional period and its Multiannual Financial Framework.
Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica expressed satisfaction over the good and close bilateral relations between Latvia and Slovakia, with special gratitude for the visits by the President of Slovakia, Andrej Kiska, and the Speaker of the National Council, Andrej Danko, to Latvia in 2018.
The Parliamentary Secretary highlighted the regular cooperation in the EU and NATO. She thanked Slovakia for its being part of the NATO’s multinational battle group in Latvia: “We highly appreciate Slovakia’s participation in the Canadian-led NATO battle group in Latvia, which is a significant contribution to the security of Latvia and the Alliance as a whole.”
One of the topics discussed was strategic communication, including the EU Action Plan Against Disinformation, as well as the increasing of media literacy, strengthening of independent media, and the experience of Slovakia and Latvia in the fight against disinformation. Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica thanked Slovakia for joining and supporting the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence; she pointed out that the fight against disinformation calls for a coordinated and systematic long-term approach. It is no less important to reinforce the EU’s StratCom Task Forces.
The delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Slovakia visited Latvia on 10–11 June and had meetings at the Saeima (Latvian Parliament), the Stratcom Centre and Camp Ādaži, with the leadership of the multinational battle group.
