On 15 May 2019 in Belgrade, Serbia, political consultations were held by the Political Directors of the Foreign Ministries of Latvia and Serbia. The Latvian delegation was headed by the Under Secretary, Political Director Jānis Mažeiks, and the Serbian delegation – by Political Director Zoran Vujić.
The consultations addressed bilateral relations, including exchange visits and the promotion of economic cooperation. Great attention was devoted to the process of Serbia’s accession to the European Union. Jānis Mažeiks confirmed that “Latvia supports the European perspective of the Western Balkans countries, including Serbia, and is prepared to continue sharing its experience of integration with the EU”. For Serbia’s accession negotiations to proceed more rapidly, reforms, especially those concerning the rule of law, should be implemented more actively.
During the meeting, the parties also discussed regional cooperation in the Western Balkans. Jānis Mažeiks pointed out that “good neighbourly relations are a safeguard for the long-term security and stability of the region, while also being a vital element in the context of European integration”.
The Political Directors shared views on current developments in international politics, including relationship with Russia and China, and the situation in the Middle East.
The previous consultations of the political directors took place in Riga in April 2018.
