On 8 May 2019, the Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jānis Mažeiks, met with the Vice-President of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Jiří Oberfalzer, for a discussion on the bilateral relations between the two countries and on topics of current importance for the European Union (EU) and security policy.
The officials expressed satisfaction with the excellent relations between Latvia and the Czech Republic and their intensive political and interparliamentary dialogue.
The Political Director thanked the Czech Republic for its contribution to the strengthening of Latvia’s security through participation in the NATO enhanced Forward Presence battle group in Latvia and NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission. The officials were unanimous that the unity and solidarity of the Allies is the cornerstone of the Alliance’s defence and deterrence policy.
Jānis Mažeiks and Jiří Oberfalzer shared opinions on the current EU-related issues, including the development of the European Single Market, migration challenges and elections to the European Parliament, including in the context of the fight against disinformation. The parties also discussed cooperation between the Baltic States and the Visegrad Group countries.
