On 17 April 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs participated in a working lunch with the Ambassadors of EU member states and candidate countries organised by the Romanian Presidency of the European Union. During the meeting, the Minister explained Latvian priorities in discussions on the future of the EU: a balanced and fair EU multiannual financial framework for 2021-2027, with emphasis on aligning living standards and farmers' direct payments, solving disinformation challenges, digitalisation and further development of the Single Market, value issues. Edgars Rinkēvičs also emphasised the importance of the European Parliament elections to be held in May.

The Minister expressed his support for the priorities set by the Romanian Presidency in the EU Council for the first half of 2019. The Presidency's motto “Cohesion, a common European value” is in line with Latvia's interests, as we always stress the importance of cohesion policy and convergence in all aspects of the EU policy.

Edgars Rinkēvičs also pointed out that the priority of Latvia regarding Brexit is still the ordered withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.

In conclusion, preparations for an informal European Council meeting on 9 May in the city of Sibiu, Romania, were discussed.
