On 15 April 2019, the Under-Secretary of State - Political Director Jānis Mažeiks attended a high level conference on Central Asia “Connectivity for Sustainable Development” in Bucharest, Romania.

Jānis Mažeiks welcomed the positive developments in cooperation between Central Asian countries. He said: “Latvia, as a country that has integrated into regional cooperation formats at different levels, can demonstrate that cooperation with the immediate neighbours plays an important role in achieving political and economic objectives of the country.”

The Political Director stressed that Central Asia is an important region for European and Asian connectivity and noted the active involvement of Latvia in the work on developing trans-Eurasian transport and logistics corridors. Jānis Mažeiks pointed out that economic cooperation with Central Asian countries would be facilitated by modernising their national and economic governance systems and by developing a favourable business environment. The Political Director said that Latvia has gained valuable knowledge and opinions in its national reform process, which we share with Central Asian countries.

In 2018, 6 development cooperation projects have been implemented to support Central Asian countries in areas such as good governance and anti-corruption, strengthening of local governance, education, green and sustainable development. The development cooperation budget managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contributed 89,5 thousand euro to Central Asia in 2018.

The High Level Conference on Central Asia is organised by the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
