On 10 April 2019, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica participated in the “Export Club” event, which presented businessmen with the priorities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for export support in 2019, highlighting practical support of the Ministry for businessmen.
The Parliamentary Secretary announced that a seminar on the acquisition of Asian market was planned on 14 June, focusing on the countries of South-East Asia, particularly Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia. At the beginning of October, a seminar on business opportunities in Latin America is scheduled to be organised, with the participation of the second businessmen delegation from Peru.
Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica also stated that, on 7 November, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans the “Market Access Day” event, which will focus on promoting cooperation with Africa. It is planned that the event will provide businessmen with information on the possibilities and characteristics of this market. Businessmen will also be informed about the newly established Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs, intended as a framework for future EU-Africa relations. The main tasks of the Alliance are promoting strategic investment and creating jobs, promoting investment in education, promoting economic integration and stabilising business environment and investment climate. The Alliance is expected to be funded from the current and future budget of the EC, where Africa is identified as a priority region, so negotiations on this initiative are linked to negotiations on the EU's multiannual financial framework for 2021-2027.
"We will also continue to inform the public about the challenges and opportunities of new export markets and the EU's trade agreements with third countries. With the support of the European Commission, foreign embassies, as well as local authorities, we are planning a number of seminars on the acquisition of new export markets,” the Parliamentary Secretary said at the event. New EU trade agreements with Vietnam and Singapore are expected to enter into force by the end of this year or early next year.
In recent years, Latvian goods exports have been growing steadily. It is clear that the main export potential is, firstly, in the close markets, particularly in the Baltic Sea region and, secondly, in the large markets. However, we need to be able to use advantages and opportunities also in regions that are interesting to our businessmen with their fast-growing economies and demand for niche products, the Parliamentary Secretary said. These aspects are also taken into account when planning visits by public officials with the participation of business delegations, focusing on maximum added value and practical results, Kalniņa-Lukaševica emphasized.
Diversification of Latvia's export market, as well as concerns about Latvia's interests in the definition and implementation of the EU's external trade policy, is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The “Export Club” means an exchange of experience initiated by the “The Red Jackets” movement of Latvian exporting companies, bringing together exporters, movement partners and supporters.
