The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received confirmation that the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) has issues a letter of entrustment to Guernsey to sign an agreement with Latvia in the social security sector. This entrustment was the main condition for Latvia and Guernsey to launch negotiations on an agreement required to ensure social rights, including the rights to pensions and other social security benefits, to Latvian nationals working in Guernsey.
The Ministry of Welfare is the authority responsible for organising the talks on the agreement in Latvia. The conclusion of the agreement will be made possible due to targeted long-term efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Latvia in the United Kingdom.
Guernsey is a self-governing territory and legally a British Crown dependency, directly subject to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The population of Guernsey is approximately 60,000, and Latvians, whose number on the island is estimated at 1000, are considered to be one of the largest communities of foreign nationals in Guernsey.
