On 6 February 2019, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the second political consultations between Latvia and Ghana. The delegation of the Latvian Foreign Ministry was led by Ambassador, Head of the Bilateral Relations Directorate, Ilgvars Kļava, and the Ghanaian delegation – by Ambassador-Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, Albert Yankey.

At the consultations, the parties discussed the dynamics of bilateral relations and the ways ahead, including in economy, the education sector and the enhancement of the legal framework. Ghanaian diplomats showed interest in Latvia’s expertise in the improvement and maintenance of education standards, as well as student exchanges in the programmes of technical sciences and agriculture. Ghana is interested in drawing on Latvia’s experience of effective forest management and the prevention of environmental pollution, as well as the application of various digital solutions in the public sector.

The parties agreed to launch the drafting of two cooperation agreements, namely, a convention for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of tax evasion with respect to taxes on income and capital, and an agreement on future cooperation in the field of education.
