On 6-7 December 2018, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, took part in an informal meeting for State Secretaries of the Foreign Ministries of the EU Member States.
The participants heard a presentation on the priorities of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU, with the focus on the importance of political unity and economic convergence among the Member States. At the meeting, Andris Pelšs highlighted Latvia’s interest in achieving progress in negotiations on the EU’s next multiannual financial framework, support for the EU’s neighbourhood policy, and the fight against disinformation.
A separate session featured an exchange of views on the importance of transatlantic relations for Europe. In conclusion, the participants discussed practical ways to improve cooperation between diplomatic services.
The meetings of State Secretaries of EU Ministries of Foreign Affairs are held twice a year, ahead of a new EU Council presidency. Romania is assuming presidency on 1 January 2019.
