On 29 November 2018, Riga hosted bilateral political consultation between Latvia and Finland. The Latvian delegation was headed by the Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jānis Mažeiks, and the Finnish delegation – by the Political Director Jukka Salovaara. The consultations focused on bilateral relations, topics concerning the external affairs and security of the European Union (EU), as well as the EU’s relationship with its eastern neighbours, and the transatlantic link.

The consultation partners commended the active political dialogue between Latvia and Finland, the all-round practical cooperation between line ministries, local authorities and civil society organisations. The diverse cultural and art events held to celebrate the centenaries of both countries have considerably strengthened people-to-people contacts.

The Political Directors were unanimous that the development of regional connectivity by working jointly on energy and transport infrastructure projects is a vital precondition for the region’s prosperity.

Special attention was devoted to regional security issues, including recent developments in the Sea of Azov. Jānis Mažeiks condemned Russia’s acts of aggression in the Black and Azov Seas, and he underlined that Russia must respect the rules of international law and cease its aggressive actions.

Jānis Mažeiks congratulated Finland on assuming the presidency of the Council of Europe and expressed support for its priorities. The Political Directors discussed preparations for the tenth anniversary of the Eastern Partnership in 2019.

The Finnish side also informed the Latvian diplomats about preparations for the presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2019. Jānis Mažeiks noted that Latvia was interested in a continued dynamic and multi-faceted cooperation with Finland at all levels and in all areas.
