A statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Russia’s actions in the Sea of Azov

26.11.2018. 11:22

Latvia condemns Russia’s aggressive actions in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and urges Russia to comply with international law by immediately ceasing all acts of destabilisation. Latvia calls for the removal of the blockade of navigation and for guarantees to an unhindered passage of vessels.

Latvia reiterates its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and the inviolability of its borders, and calls on the international community to respond in a strong and consistent manner to Russia’s aggressive actions.

On 25 November 2018, vessels of the Russian Federation, in violation of international law and freedom of navigation, illegally performed acts of aggression against the Ukrainian Navy ships in the area of the Kerch Strait, opening fire on and seizing them. According to information at the Latvian Foreign Ministry’s disposal, some Ukrainian servicemen have been wounded.
