On 27 September 2018 in Riga, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) together with the World Leadership Alliance – Club de Madrid hold a Roundtable on Global Governance for Information Integrity.
Our democratic and free world is experiencing a time in which social media and new forms of communication hold a special place. With their use becoming increasingly active, the spread of disinformation and fake news has considerably expanded. The new conditions call for a responsible attitude and appropriate counteraction. With a view to stimulating a broad and comprehensive exchange of views on the impact of threats on information integrity and democratic processes, the Club de Madrid has invited opinion leaders and policy-makers to join a discussion.
The policy recommendations formulated at the Roundtable will feed into the Riga Conference on 28-29 September 2018.
The participants include former Presidents and Prime Ministers: Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, former President of Latvia, President of the Club de Madrid; Mehdi Jomaa, former Prime Minister of Tunisia; Valdis Birkavs, former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Latvia; Alfred Gusenbauer, former Chancellor of Austria, and others.
The Opening Session will be broadcast live in Latvian and English on the MFA website.
The World Leadership Alliance – Club de Madrid, established in 2001, is composed of more than 100 former Presidents and Prime Ministers from over 70 countries worldwide.
