From 19 to 20 September, diplomats in charge of economic matters are having their annual training in Riga. The training session is organised to promote cooperation between diplomats and businesses upon both entering foreign markets and sharing their hitherto successful experience. The welcoming address to the participants was delivered by Andris Pelšs, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In the introductory part of the programme, the participants heard a lecture by Arnis Sauka, Associated Professor at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga and Director of the Sustainable Business Centre, entitled “The way forward to a productive business environment: The case of Latvia”.
For a discussion on current developments in the innovation sector, the diplomats met with Artis Grinbergs, advisor to the Prime Minister on economic matters, Ingmārs Pūķis, Vice President of Latvijas Mobilais Telefons, and Katrīna Amerika, a representative from the Latvijas Valsts Meži state-owned forest company.
Latest updates on the Latvian financial system were presented by Līga Kļaviņa, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, and Sanda Liepiņa, Chairperson of the Board of the Finance Latvia Association.
As the diplomats discuss issues related to the connectivity of Latvia’s transport infrastructure, they will also meet with representatives from the Riga International Airport and the airBaltic airline, as well as being given an insight into the Latvian Tourism Marketing Strategy produced by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA).
Opportunities for exporting Latvian design and latest developments in the field will be discussed with Dita Danosa, Deputy Chairperson of the Latvian Design Council.
On 20 September, the diplomats will visit Liepāja, meet the city's political and administrative leaders and representatives from the Special Economic Zone, take a tour of the Liepāja Port and the Karosta Industrial Park, as well as having meetings with small and medium sized businesses of the city.
The training session brings together more than 40 Latvian diplomats from 33 countries. The training is organised with support from an ESF project No.18.104.22.168/15/I/001, “Professional development of human resources in public administration for the development of better legal framework in support of small and medium-sized businesses”, run by the School of Public Administration.
