On 31 July 2018 the President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis presented credentials to the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Italy, Solvita Āboltiņa.
Solvita Āboltiņa began her career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993, where she got her initial experience in the Consular Department as Senior Desk Officer, and later – as Head of the Consular Legal Division. From 1995 to 2002, she was Director of the Consular Department.
In 2002 Solvita Āboltiņa became a member of Saeima (The Latvian Parliament) and was elected for all parliamentary terms till 2017. Solvita Āboltiņa was the Speaker of the 10th and 11th Saeima, as well as was heading and working in several Saeima commissions. From December 2004 to April 2006, she served as Minister of Justice.
Since February 2018, Solvita Āboltiņa is the Director of the European Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 1986 Solvita Āboltiņa graduated from the Faculty of Law of the State University of Latvia, having obtained higher education qualifications in Law. She has received awards from Sweden, Finland and Estonia.
Solvita Āboltiņa will succeed Artis Bērtulis, who has been performing the duties of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Italy since August 2013.
Italy has traditionally been a significant and friendly cooperation partner to Latvia, and both countries exchange visits on a regular basis. Extensive and close mutual cooperation is ongoing in the fields of culture, education, defence and security. From 2-4 July 2018, the Italian President Sergio Mattarella was in Latvia on a state visit.
