On 16 May 2018, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs had a telephone conversation with the United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, during which they discussed the recent US-Baltic States Summit, the upcoming NATO Summit in Brussels, and the Nord Stream 2 project.
Edgars Rinkēvičs thanked the United States for its support for the strengthening of security in the Baltic States and underlined the need for making effort to put in practice the declaration of the US-Baltic States Summit adopted by the leaders of the four countries in Washington D.C. on 3 April.
The Foreign Minister noted that at the NATO Summit to be held in Brussels this coming July, Latvia would expect decisions on the integration of the sea and air support elements in the current NATO defence arrangements in the Baltic Sea region.
The parties shared opinions and were unanimous about the negative geopolitical impact of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project on the Baltic Sea region.
Edgars Rinkēvičs congratulated Mike Pompeo on his recent approval and taking up office as Secretary of State. The Foreign Minister recalled Pompeo’s visit to Latvia in September 2016, when he was a US Congressman, and invited Mike Pompeo to visit Latvia in the capacity of US Secretary of State.
