The Cabinet approves the secondment of one more civilian expert to the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine

On 19 December, the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers approved the secondment of a Latvian civilian expert, Sandis Kalējs, as a monitor to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine.  

The participation of Sandis Kalējs will raise the number of Latvian civilian experts in the OSCE mission to Ukraine to eight.


The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (OSCE SMM Ukraine) was deployed on 21 March 2014 with the aim of monitoring the fulfilment of the Minsk agreements and facilitating peace and security in the conflict zone. Latvia’s civilian experts have been participating in the mission since its early days. On 21 February 2017, the Cabinet of Ministers conceptually supported the sending of up to 15 civilian experts on the OSCE SMM Ukraine. Candidates are selected by the organisation’s Secretariat in Vienna.
