On 11 December, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly with the Investment and development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) held a discussion on economic relations between Latvia and the United States of America. The event brought together more than 40 Latvian businesspeople from the IT, financial services, food industry, transport and logistics sectors.
The State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andrejs Pildegovičs, stressed in his opening remarks that strong business cooperation with the US is a major stimulus not only to Latvia’s growth but also to ensuring security and geopolitical stability. 2017 has been a very important milestone in the economic relations between Latvia and the US: after an eight-year break, the LIAA Representative Office has restarted its operations in the US; Latvia’s export has doubled, amounting to 212 million EUR by the end of the 3rd quarter of 2017; the largest ever conference for Latvian businesses in the US, Spotlight Latvia, took place in Chicago in October 2017. Besides, the US has at last joined Latvia’s top ten export destinations.
Businesspeople recalled the successful “Spotlight Latvia” event, welcomed the resumption of the work of the LIAA Representative Office in the US, and underlined the increasing interest of Latvian businesses in US markets.
Taking part in the discussion were: Toms Zvidriņš, Head of the Latvian Economic Representation in the US; Pēteris Freimanis, Head of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce in the US; Arnis Kākulis, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Latvia; and Guntars Vičmanis, Commercial Specialist at the Embassy of Latvia in the US.
