Recent developments do not change the position of the Government of Latvia on the Catalonian issue: this is an internal matter for Spain and has to be dealt with in line with Spanish law and the country’s Constitution.
We hope that the issue of Catalonia will be resolved by means of dialogue within the framework of Spanish Constitution. Latvia will not recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Catalonia.
Latvia has close bilateral relationship with Spain, and Spain is an ally to Latvia in the European Union and NATO, as well as other international organisations. Spain is a democratic country, which respects the rule of law. In light of this, the situation must be resolved in compliance with the relevant legislation of the Member State and of the EU.
