On 23 October, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the President of the Senate of the Romanian Parliament, Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu, who is in Latvia on an official visit.
The officials agreed that both countries should pursue a more intensive political dialogue and focused in particular the potential for enhancing economic cooperation. The parties shared views on the development of the Three Seas Initiative, which would provide a platform for economic projects. Current security issues and developments in the Eastern Partnership region were also discussed.
The official visit to Latvia by Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu, President of the Senate of Romania, on 23-24 October, is taking place at a significant moment – this year marks the 95th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Latvia and Romania. At this time, Romania is also preparing for its Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2019.
As part of his visit, the President of the Romanian Senate is to meet with the President of Latvia, Raimonds Vējonis, the Speaker of the Saeima (the Latvian Parliament), Ināra Mūrniece, Deputy Speaker Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, and the Chairperson of the Saeima European Affairs Committee, Lolita Čigāne. Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu will also meet the Director of the NATO Strategic Centre of Excellence, Jānis Sārts.
