A reminder from the Latvian Foreign Ministry on travel restrictions with respect to Crimea

15.03.2016. 17:30

Two years have passed since the illegal and illegitimate referendum on joining Crimea to the Russian Federation followed by a decision of the Russian Federation on absorbing Crimea into its territory. Latvia together with the European Union continues its unwavering support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and implementation of a persistent policy of non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to remind travellers that, in accordance with Ukrainian legislation currently in force, entry into the parts of Ukraine’s territory that were illegally occupied by the Russian Federation is allowed only via Ukrainian checkpoints and by official permission specially given by Ukrainian authorities. Unsanctioned crossing of the Ukrainian border upon arrival to Crimea will be enforced and travellers violating these rules could become subject to a prohibition on visiting Ukraine in future.

Further information on procedures for the entry to Crimea.

The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that travellers refrain from visiting the Crimean Peninsula considering that, under existing circumstances, it is not possible to ensure consular assistance in this region.
