On 17 September, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ireland, Aidan Kirwan, met with the Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs on a farewell visit.
The Foreign Minister thanked the Ambassador for his contribution to the strengthening of bilateral relations and for Ireland’s support during the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
In their conversation, the Foreign Minister and the Ambassador addressed the matters of current importance in Latvian-Irish relations, recognised the positive political dialogue taking place in EU fora, and agreed that the exchange of bilateral visits should be more frequent.
In view of the large Latvian diaspora in Ireland, issues such as possibilities for learning Latvian at Irish schools and cases involving sham marriages are high on the cooperation agenda.
Ambassador Aidan Kirwan was accredited in Latvia on 12 October 2010.
