On 29 January, the President of Singapore, Tony Tan, accredited the first Ambassador of Latvia to Singapore, Pēteris Vaivars. Ambassador Pēteris Vaivars will be working to promote cooperation between Latvia and Singapore in the fields of politics, business, culture and education.
The programme for this accreditation visit is extensive. Ambassador Vaivars will meet with Singapore’s Minister of Trade and Industry as well as with diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and officials responsible for the promotion of contacts in business, trade and tourism. The Ambassador aims to intensify meetings and visits, and to facilitate and stimulate trade cooperation, and the visits of business delegations. The Ambassador will also ask Singapore to appoint an Ambassador and an honorary consul to Latvia.
In addition, Ambassador Vaivars is meeting with the staff of the Singapore Business Federation, International Enterprise Singapore, and the Singapore Tourism Board. During the meetings the Ambassador is planning to emphasise the need for expanding business and trade between Latvia and Singapore and to call on Singaporean companies to continue investing in Latvia.
The Ambassador will be accompanied by Lāsma Līdaka, the head of the Representative Office in Singapore of the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia.
The Ambassador has already met with the representatives of EU Member States in Singapore to inform them about Latvia’s priorities for its Presidency of the Council of the EU. To discuss opportunities and future activities, Pēteris Vaivars met with Karsten Warnecke, Deputy Executive Director of the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), which is based in Singapore. The Ambassador also intends to meet with the Latvian diaspora in Singapore and take part in the opening of the new Honorary Consulate of Latvia in Singapore.
Support for the preparation of the visit to Singapore and for the visit itself is being provided by Jeng-tek Low, the Honorary Consul of Latvia in Singapore, and members of the Latvian community in Singapore.
Pēteris Vaivars will also go on a visit to Malaysia, where he will meet with officials from the Foreign Ministry of Malaysia to discuss bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Malaysia and EU-Malaysia cooperation.
Pēteris Vaivars is Deputy State Secretary and Administrative Director of the Foreign Ministry as well as being Latvia’s Ambassador of Latvia to Malaysia. He resides in Riga.
