Latvia establishes diplomatic relations with Sudan

On 23 January in New York diplomatic relations were established between the Republic of Latvia and the Republic of the Sudan.

Joint Communiqué on establishing diplomatic relations between both countries was signed, on behalf of Latvia, by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, Jānis Mažeiks, and, on behalf of Sudan, by the Charge d’ Affaires a.i. to the UN in New York, Hassan Hamid Hassan.

The representatives of both countries expressed satisfaction at the establishing of diplomatic relations that will promote cooperation at bilateral level as well as in other formats. The representatives discussed the historic and cultural development of both countries, the possibilities for economic cooperation, as well as regional issues, including Sudan and South Sudan relations, cooperation with the UN institutions and the priorities of both countries at the UN.
