On 26 March 2001 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Mr Indulis Berzins had a meeting with the new Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Latvia Dr Wolfgang Jilly.
In the conversation with the Ambassador of Austria Mr Berzins laid emphasis on the co-operation in the European Union (EU) integration process. Mr Jilly expressed Austria's support to the admission of Latvia to the EU already in the first round of the EU enlargement. The parties noted importance of the public information work launched in Austria about Latvia as a future EU member state. The Ambassador of Austria also pointed out that Austria and Latvia have many common points of interrelation in history, culture and other spheres. In the conversation the forthcoming international conference on small languages in the 21st century Europe to be held within the framework of Latvia's presidency at the Council of Europe in Riga was also touched upon.
During the meeting the officials also discussed bilateral co-operation development possibilities, as well as the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria Dr Benita Ferrero-Waldner to Latvia in the beginning of April.
