The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia has received a diplomatic note from the Embassy of Ukraine in Riga containing information that the Law “On Ensuring Protection of the Rights and Freedoms of Citizens and Legal Regime on the Temporarily Occupied Territory of Ukraine” has come into force in Ukraine.
The law permits foreign nationals and stateless persons to enter and leave the temporarily occupied territory only at specific border checkpoints, provided they have obtained a prior special permit from competent Ukrainian authorities. Persons who violate the new procedure of entry and departure can be subject to a fine or even arrest. Foreigners and stateless persons are forbidden to transit through the temporarily occupied territory.
Further information about the new travel procedures can be received at the Ukrainian Embassy in Riga.

In view of the tense political and security situation – the illegitimate annexation of this Ukrainian territory – and the inability to ensure consular protection to travellers in the region under the current circumstances, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns against all travel to the Crimean Peninsula.
