On 3 September in New York, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the United Nations Jānis Mažeiks presented his letter of credence to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

At the meeting the parties discussed current international developments and Latvia’s involvement in the work of the organisation, especially in preparations for the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council, coinciding with the time when an agreement will have to be achieved within the UN on a new framework for the post-2015 development goals. Ambassador Mažeiks pledged Latvia’s readiness to expand cooperation with UN institutions in the Eastern Partnership and Central Asian countries, which are priority regions for Latvia, as well as considering the possibilities of taking part in UN peacekeeping operations. The expected visit by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania at the end of this year was also discussed.
