On 6th of May 2019, the Ambassador of Latvia Artis Bērtulis presented his Letter of Credence to the President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena. During his accreditation visit Ambassador Bērtulis met with high government officials. The parties discussed the cooperation between the two countries in various fields as well as opportunities to advance it.
In their conversation, the parties underlined the need to expand the political dialogue through exchange of high-level visits and political consultations, advance economic relations, trade and reciprocal investments, and promote contacts in culture and education. The potential stemming from cooperation in the sector of maritime transport and logistics was likewise noted, since Latvia and Sri Lanka are both maritime countries.
Interests of Latvia in Sri Lanka are represented by the Embassy of Latvia in India. Artis Bērtulis is the first non-residing Ambassador of Latvia to Sri Lanka and the second resident Ambassador of Latvia to India. Prior to his posting, he has been a resident Ambassador to Sweden, Portugal and Italy, Permanent Representative in Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), non-resident Ambassador to Albania, Malta and San Marino, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister of Latvia, and a Head of the State Protocol as well as the European Union Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.
