On 27 February 2018, H.E. Ambassador of Latvia to India Mr Aivars Groza met with the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha of India Ms Snehlata Shrivastava, expressing invitation to H.E. Speaker of the Lok Sabha of India Ms Sumitra Mahajan to visit Latvia, as Latvia marks 100 years since independent statehood. The Ambassador stressed that the Centenary of Latvia coincides with 70 years since India’s independence, and 25 years of diplomatic relations between the Latvia and India, therefore a visit by H.E. Speaker of the Lok Sabha to Latvia would be an important and historic moment in furthering and strengthening the relationship between the two countries. The Ambassador noted also the positive and growing dynamics between Latvia and India in issues regarding economics, culture and education. For example, the emerging cargo-reloading center in Riga Freeport, which is being developed by the Latvian-Indian joint company, and purpose of which is to consolidate Indian export goods over the CIS and European Union markets; the first Centre for Baltic Culture and Studies in India, Haridwar; as well as the growing number of Indian students in Latvian universities. The Secretary General of the Lok Sabha expressed her gratitude for the invitation and noted that an exchange of visits at the level of Speaker of the Parliament would be the first of its kind in history of diplomatic relations between the both countries.
