Visas to Latvia

There are a number of countries whose citizens can enter Latvia without visa. Citizens of these countries can enter and stay in Latvia up to 90 days without visa.

Information for the citizens of the member states of the European Union and the European Economic Area, or Switzerland (EU/EEA/Switzerland citizen).

Facilitated regime for the crossing of the border of the Republic of Latvia for the purpose of transit as of 1st December 2006.

For citizens of countries who need a visa to enter Latvia, to receive a visa for the Republic of Latvia, the following documents need to be submitted at the Consulate General.

  • Passport or other valid travel document containing at least two blank pages and with a term of validity that exceeds by at least three months the expiry date of the visa requested
  • One photo (35x45mm) colored, on white or light-gray background, not older than 3 months
  • Number of the invitation approved at the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs of the Republic of Latvia or other documents confirming the purpose of entry. OCMA approved invitations are not required only in following cases: 
    • for transit visas
    • visa applicant is a Latvian or a Liv, or a person of whom at least one parent is a citizen of Latvia
    • visa applicant needs to manage his/her real property or accept an inheritance located in the Republic of Latvia
    • visa applicant is required to participate in court proceedings or investigative proceedings in the Republic of Latvia 
    • visa applicant is a provider of international freight or passenger transport
    • where this corresponds to the international commitments
    • where this is linked to humanitarian considerations or to a force majeure
    • where this corresponds to the interests of the Latvian State 

Applicants must be able to prove the above-mentioned with documents 

  • Health and life insurance policy for the entire duration of the stay in Latvia
  • State fee for processing visa application
  • For a child travelling without its parent visa application must be accompanied by the parents' notarised letter of consent confirming that the child may travel alone or accompanied by a specified person 

Transit visa 

To apply for transit visa, the applicant should have visa or residence permit of the third country, unless a visa for entry to the third country is not required. Validity of the transit visa does not exceed 6 months. Term of one transit entrance in Latvia does not exceed 72 hours.

Please be aware that consular officer has the right to ask for additional information and documents if necessary.

State fees for processing visa applications

Payment should be done in cash and only in EURO. The Consulate General does not accept personal cheques, and cannot accommodate the use of credit or debit cards.

For children under the age of 16, visas are free of charge.

The visa-processing fee is non-refundable.

Consulate takes a decision on the issue of a visa within 7 working days.
If additional information is required, a decision on the issue of a visa is taken within 30 days.
