Latvia's Ambassador to the Netherlands Karlis Eihenbaums and his wife Inara today paid a farewell visit to Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. The Queen received her guests in an audience at her permanent residence in the Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague. The Queen conferred on Mr Eihenbaums the Grand Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau (Knight 1st Class) and thanked him for his contribution towards the development of friendly relations between Latvia and the Netherlands. The Queen praised the Ambassador's personal achievement in establishing the Latvian Embassy in the Netherlands, comparing it to "putting Latvia on the map in the Netherlands", and expressed pleasure at the success of the visit to Latvia by Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Maxima. During the audience, Mr Eihenbaums presented Her Majesty with a letter from Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga responding to congratulations from the Queen on the occasion of Dr Vike-Freiberga's re-election for a second term in office. The visit by the President of Latvia to the Kingdom of the Netherlands anticipated in 2004 was discussed. Queen Beatrix expressed interest in the progress and preparations by Latvia for membership of the European Union and NATO. The work and conclusion of the European Convention were also touched upon.
