European Union Foreign Ministers express common position on the issue of Syria

On 6 and 7 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs took part in an informal meeting of the European Union (EU) Foreign Ministers in the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius. The foreign ministers expressed a common position that the information available on the chemical weapons attack in the suburbs of Damascus on 21 August indicated the Syrian Government’s responsibility for what had happened.

Record-high activity of voters abroad for February 18th National Referendum

On February 18, 2012 39,763 citizens of Latvia abroad participated in the national referendum on the Amendments to the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia. In the United States, 2950 citizens voted in total.473 voters voted at the Embassy of Latvia in Washington, DC (that includes 269 votes by mail and 204 voting in person). Ambassadorial Transition

On January 12, Ambassador Maris Riekstins returned to Latvia to assume the position of Chief of Staff at the Office of Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis. Mr. Maris Selga is heading the Embassy of Latvia until the arrival of a new ambassador.Ambassador Riekstins served as Latvia's Ambassador to the U.S. from December 2004-January 2007. He was also Latvia's Ambassador to Mexico. Prior to his position as Ambassador, Mr. Riekstins served as State Secretary in Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On Sunday, October 8 in Cleveland, Ohio, the Latvian Cultural Garden was inaugurated. As the most recent garden added to the Cleveland Cultural Garden Collection, the Latvian Garden’s focal point is a granite sculpture designed by Latvian artist Girts Burvis, who was present at the inauguration. For the first time, the Embassy of Latvia participated in the 22nd Kalorama House and Embassy Tour. The tour took place on Sunday, September 17 in the Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, DC.
