The Embassy of Latvia and the American Latvian Association supported a special screening of the Latvian film “The Chronicles of Melanie” for the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on November 20. The film was shown at the Rodeo Screening Room in Los Angeles, CA. The Ambassador of Latvia Mr Andris Teikmanis and the director of the film Mr Viesturs Kairišs talked to the members of the Academy before the screening of the film.
Ambassador Teikmanis said that this is a Latvian story but the repressions depicted in the film have also been suffered by those of many other nationalities. The film’s message is that totalitarian regimes have no regard for humanity.
This is already the tenth time that Latvia has submitted a film for the Oscar nominations. Upon selecting this film in September, the National Film Centre of Latvia (NFC) said:
“This is an epic and stylistically uniform work, significant for the history and culture of Latvia, presenting a strong central character, expressive visual solution and outstanding acting performances. The film is distinguished by its ability to accentuate sensations and emotional experience rather than facts and dates, subjugating all the elements of cinematic language to cinematic logics of feelings.”
NFC also has informed that “The Chronicles of Melanie” had its national premiere on November 1, 2016, and in a short period of time acquired a sizeable audience – during the first two months it had more than 75,000 admissions, ranking it as the box office leader in Latvia in 2016.
The film has been submitted for consideration for the 90th award season in the category of the Best Foreign Language Film. There are 92 submissions, 37 of which are from Europe. The nominations will be announced on January 23, 2018 and the ceremony will take place on March 4, 2018.
