Welcome Speech of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Andris Razāns

Welcome to the newly-redesigned website of the Embassy of Latvia!

We have constructed this website in order to facilitate your communication and interaction with Latvia, one of Europe’s most interesting and unique countries.  I hope that you will find it to be a reliable and useful tool for establishing the first contact with our country for those who have not yet visited Latvia, but plan to do so.  And also for those who are familiar with Latvia but would like to intensify or renew their knowledge. Or for those who would like to stay in touch with Latvia, its people or get to know its unique nature.

My friends! I would like to tell you that Latvia is an unusual place in the north of Europe.  Geography has always played an important role in the history of nations and in people’s lives.  In Latvia’s case that meant and continues to mean being located in the arteries of important European culture and in the crossroads of trade routes. The characterization of Latvia does not conform to simple, sterotypical brands.  One needs to get to know Latvia slowly, but those who have managed to do so do not regret it.

The fascinating history of the Baltic people, constantly striving for the best way to coexist with the neighboring Germanic and Slavic peoples. A medieval European crusader nation, the Renaissance, the Reformation, Europe’s religious wars and the Thirty Years’ War, the Enlightenment and Romanticism, the second-to-none Jugendstil architecture of Riga.  Two world wars, Soviet occupation, the Singing Revolution, and the Baltic Way.  All this followed by the restoration of independence and the complete return of the people of our nation to the Western value system.  One of the most ecologically pure places on this earth.  One of today’s fastest-growing economies in the European Union, with well-educated, hard-working people, with a Northern European mentality and work ethic.  With people who are open to the world, to new contacts and to changes.

Latvia is a country that is a reliable partner and a very close friend to the United States of America.

Such is Latvia today.  Explore it, ask us, those who work at the Embassy about it and, of course, visit it.  Latvia awaits you!
