On 14 September 2015 the Visa Information System (VIS) became operational in Russia. In practice, this means that visa applicants have to appear in person when lodging an application for a short-stay Schengen visa in order to provide their biometric data (fingerprints).

Finger scans are not required from children under the age of 12.Travellers to the Schengen Area do not have to give new finger scans every time they apply for a new visa. Once finger scans are stored in VIS, they can be re-used for further visa applications over a 5-year period.

Please note that only an electronically filled visa application may be submitted in order to apply for a Schengen visa
