Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs conveys condolences to Foreign Minister of Russia

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs has sent a letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov, expressing deepest condolences over the air crash near Tyumen. “At this saddest of moments, please convey my profoundest sympathies to the families and friends of those who died, and wish a speedy and successful recovery to the injured,” the Foreign Minister wrote.

Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the ban on livestock imports from EU to Russia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is concerned about the coming into effect on March 20 of the decision by the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance of Russia to impose a temporary ban on the import of live pigs from the European Union (EU) member states. We regard the temporary ban imposed by Russia on the imports of livestock as disproportionate and not in line with the World Trade Organisation standards, which Russia would embrace after the ratification of its WTO accession package.

Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs: Latvia wants to cooperate with Russia but will not tolerate interference in domestic affairs

On 7 March at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Ambassador of the Russian Federation Alexander Veshnyakov. During the meeting, the parties exchanged opinions on a number of current issues on the agenda of their bilateral relations. “Latvia wants good relations with its neighbouring country, Russia, based on the principles of mutual respect and advantage,” emphasised Minister Rinkēvičs during the conversation.

Political consultation between foreign ministries of Latvia and Russia held in Moscow

On 1 March in Moscow, the Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Andris Razāns held political consultations with his colleagues from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. The parties reviewed the matters concerning cooperation between the European Union and Russia. Security policy and the most important current issues of NATO-Russia cooperation were also discussed.

Membership approved for the Latvia-Russia Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Scientific and Technical, Humanitarian, and Cultural cooperation

On 31 January, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the membership of the Latvia-Russia Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Scientific and Technical, Humanitarian, and Cultural Cooperation. The commission will be chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs.
