On 11 February 2004, the Foreign Policy Club at the Parliament of Sweden organised a discussion on the EU enlargement, in which the ten new member states participated. At the discussion, the Ambassadors of the ten countries expressed their opinions on what these countries will be able to offer the EU after the accession, how would the free movement of labour affect their labour markets, what their environment standards are, as well as on gender equality related issues.
Speaker of the Riksdag, Björn von Sydow, chaired the discussion. The Ambassador of Latvia to Sweden, Artis Bertulis, confirmed Latvia's readiness to participate in the EU processes, evidenced by the dynamic economic development and the rapid growth of the GDP in Latvia, as well as by the vitality, flexibility and creative potential of the residents of Latvia and their patience and endurance obtained in the course of historical hardships.
Along with the discussion, an exhibition was open for visitors in Riksdag presenting the ten new member states. The exhibited photos gave a glimpse of the beautiful nature scenes and urban life, culture and traditions of the new member states. Latvia participated with an exhibition on the Song Festival, arranged by Juris Krumins and dedicated to Riga's 800th anniversary. On display were also informative materials on tourism opportunities in Latvia and Riga, on the Latvian Song and Dance Festival tradition, as well as materials containing political and economic facts about Latvia. The Latvian Institute presented a slide show about Latvia. Visitors of the exhibition were offered the famous Latvian Laima chocolate. Placed at the centre of the exhibition hall, the Latvian show won much attention from the visitors of the exhibition.
