The organisers of the Monday Meetings in support of Baltic independence deliver an historic banner to the Embassy of Latvia [22 Oct 2003]

One of the organisers of the Monday Meetings, Peeter Luksep, visited the Latvian Embassy on 30th. September to present to the Ambassador a banner of historic significance printed with the words: 'Vi stöder balterna' (Eng.: 'We support the Balts') requesting that it be placed in the Occupation Museum of Latvia in Riga.

The banner adorned the speakers' rostrum during the so-called Monday Meetings which were held on a weekly basis for 76 consecutive weeks from March, 1990 to September, 1991, at Norrmalmstorg in central Stockholm. The purpose of the meetings was to demonstrate support for the demand of the Baltic States for independence from the Soviet Union. On occasion as many as 8000 participants attended the demonstrations which took place on a regular basis in 30 Swedish cities. During the days of the barricades in 1991 Monday Meetings were held in some 50 Swedish towns.

The President of Latvia, Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga has recognised the efforts of the organisers by awarding them, Peeter Luksep included, the Order of the Three Stars ( Latv.: Triju Zvaigžņu Ordenis), the most prestigious state award of Latvia.
