The State Defence Financing Law

The law comes into force on May 2nd, 2001

This law has been adopted by the Saeima on 5 April 2001


The Saeima (the Parliament) has passed and the President of Latvia has announced

 

Section 1
The purpose of this Law is to determine the amount of financing allocated for the national defence, safety and integration in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (hereinafter - NATO) in order to ensure a long-term development planning system of the National Armed Forces and promote a purposeful increase of the national defence capabilities of Latvia, aimed at the implementation of NATO standards, thus creating a real basis for Latvia's integration in the European and Trans-Atlantic security structures, which is the priority of Latvia's foreign policy and security policy.

Section 2
The Cabinet, in preparing the draft budget for the current year, shall provide the following amount of financing for the national defence, security and integration in NATO:
1) in 2002 - 1.75 percent of the gross domestic product; and
2) from 2003 until 2008 (inclusive) - 2 percent of the gross domestic product.
