Co-operation between the two states mainly takes place within international organisations. On 28 November 2001 President Guntis Ulmanis of Latvia made a visit to San Marino.
History of diplomatic relations
San Marino recognised the restoration of the independence of Latvia on 26 August 1991.
The agreement on the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Latvia and San Marino was concluded by exchanging diplomatic notes, and it entered into force on 18 May 2000.

Latvian ambassadors to San Marino
Latvian ambassadors to San Marino reside in Rome. The first Latvian Ambassdor to San Marino, Mārtiņš Perts, was accredited on 31 March 2001.
Ambassador Jānis Lūsis was accredited on 30 September 2003.
Ambassador Astra Kurme was accredited on 20 February 2007.

The first Ambassador of San Marino to Latvia, H. E. Frederica Bigi, was accredited on 27 June 2006. The Ambassador resides in San Marino.
Honorary Consul
On 19 June 2002, Niccolo Rostiani, an Italian national, was appointed as the Latvian Honorary Consul in San Marino. Niccolo Rostiani also holds the post of the Honorary Consul in Italy (in Florence, the Tuscany consular district).
