Iran (at that time known as Persia) accorded de iure recognition to the newly-established Latvian state on 10 February 1921. A Friendship Agreement (an agreement of the establishment of diplomatic relations) was signed on 15 January 1929. France represented Latvia's interests in Iran until 1940. Iran was among those states which did not recognize the incorporation of Latvia into the USSR.

Constructive relations between Latvia and Iran are currently being impeded by Iran's nuclear policy.

Iran recognized Latvia's independence on 10 September 1991. Diplomatic relations between the states were renewed on 7 July 1992. The first Iranian Ambassador was accredited by Latvia on 2 February 1993.

Hassan Ghashghavi has been the accredited Ambassador to Latvia since 26 April 2005, with residence in Stockholm.

Latvia does not have an ambassador to Iran.

Latvia participates in the joint EU dialogue with Iran.
