Relations between Latvia and Indonesia [19 Sep 2006]

Latvia was the first of the Baltic states with which Indonesia established diplomatic relations on 25 August 1993.

Relations between Latvia and Indonesia can be characterised as good, although not very active. During the previous year, Latvian export to Indonesia has decreased and import increased.

It has been twice that Latvia has rendered assistance to Indonesian people who had suffered in earthquakes.

In January 2005, approximately 100,000 LVL were donated to tsunami victims in Thailand and Indonesia. In addition, 2 helicopters were forwarded for transportation of cargos and people who had suffered in the disaster.

In June 2006, the Latvian Government donated 25,000 EUR to Indonesian civilians who had suffered in the earthquake. The Latvian donation was included in the common Red Cross assistance project for assistance to victims of the earthquake: medical care, potable water, maintenance of the sanitary system, and instalment and ensuring of emergency shelter during the following 12 months.


Indonesian Ambassadors to Latvia (resident in Stockholm)

  • On 22 September 1993, the first Ambassador of Indonesia to Latvia H.Ibrahim Jasin accredited.
  • From 17.09.1996 to June 1999, the Ambassador of Indonesia to Latvia was Harighun Harjatanoj.

As from 18 November 2003, Charge d'Affaires of Indonesia to Latvia is Ben Perkasa Drajat.

On 4 – 5 November 1996, the Latvian Foreign Minister Valdis Birkavs and a delegation of businessmen visited Indonesia.

On 14 June 2006 Indonesian President's Special Envoy, Ambassador Nugroho Wisnumurti, visited Latvia


Economic co-operation

Latvian export to Indonesia constituted USD 0.1 million, or 0.002% of total Latvian export. Indonesia ranks 96th among Latvia's export partners. Import from Indonesia constituted USD 2.4 million, or 0.03% of total Latvia's import.  Indonesia ranks 29th among Latvia's import partners. 


The main export goods to Indonesia are machinery and mechanical appliances, and electrical equipment (45.2%); timber and timber products (36.5); and plastic and plastic articles (16%).


The main import goods from Indonesia are plastic and plastic products (27.8%); machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment (18.49%); wood paper-mass, paper and carton (15.82%).

No Indonesian investment has been registered in the statute capital of Latvian companies.


Co-operation in culture

In September 2005, in response to an invitation from the spouse of the

President of Indonesia, Ms Kristiana Hirovatu, Latvian art schools, secondary schools and pre-school educational establishments participated in the exhibition of children's drawings Drawings of Hope, organised by the assistance programme Openness Heart Tears and Smiles to provide assistance to victims in the natural calamity.

Altogether 104 drawings from Latvia, together with several thousands of other drawings from the whole world were displayed in the exhibition Drawings of Hope in the National Museum of Indonesian capital Jakarta from 13 to 15 February 2006.
