Latvia is developing its relations with Armenia based on principles of bilateral co-operation and Latvia's status as a member state of the EU and of NATO. Relations may be described as friendly and constructive. There are opportunities to further expand and develop co-operation.
Chronology of diplomatic relations
Latvia recognised the independence of the Republic of Armenia on 8 January 1992. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 22 August 1992.
Aivars Vovers was accredited as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Armenia in February 2002, residing in Vienna. He is also Head of the Latvian representation to the OSCE in Vienna.
The Armenian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Latvia is Ashot Galoyan residing in Warsaw. He was accredited in June 2006.

Legal framework
At present, 7 inter-governmental agreements have been signed between Latvia and Armenia, as well as several agreements between public administration institutions of both countries. Several agreements are at the co-ordination stage.
