Statement by Mr. Walter Schwimmer,
Secretary General of the Council of Europe regarding the adoption of the State Language Law
10 December 1999 I welcome improvements contained in the amendments to the State Language Law as approved yesterday. They show in comparison with the previous version, a positive development in the right direction. I express the hope that the remaining concerns regarding the compatibility of the law with the European Convention of Human Rights and other relevant international instruments will be addressed through the regulatory acts of the Cabinet of Ministers and the implementation of the law. The Council of Europe stands ready to provide further assistance to the Latvian authorities with a view to promoting the integration of Latvian society through measures that are in line with Latvia's international commitments.
