The Diaspora Policy Working Group was established in October 2013 within the framework of the Monitoring Council for the Implementation of the Guidelines on National Identity, Civil Society and Integration Policy.
The working group is tasked with coordinating and strengthening cooperation between institutions in Latvia and diaspora organisations, as well as devising a concerted diaspora policy and a planning document on the development of the diaspora sector. The working group evaluates developments related to the diaspora issues, analyses the effectiveness of ongoing activities and offers recommendations on the diaspora support initiatives.
The working group is chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in association with the Ministry of Culture, which functions as a secretariat.
In accordance with “The Statute of the Diaspora Working Group of the Monitoring Council for the Implementation of the Guidelines on National Identity, Civil Society and Integration Policy” of 20.09.2013., the following institutions and organisations are represented in the working group:
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Ministry of Culture
- Ministry of Education and Science
- Ministry of Economics
- Prime Minister’s Office
- World Federation of Free Latvians
- European Latvian Association
- Latvian Language Agency
- Society Integration Foundation
Representatives from institutions and organisations are delegated by the administration of a respective institution or organisation.
The Working Group can also invite representatives from other public institutions and non-governmental organisations, and independent experts to take part in its meetings in the capacity of advisors.
