The Centenary Oak was planted on the centennial of the Republic of Latvia for the enduring memory and in honour of those who stood firmly for independence and freedom.

The ceremony took place in the presence of H. E. Ambassador of Latvia Kārlis Eihenbaums, His Worship Jim Watson, the Mayor of Ottawa, the representatives of the Algonquin Nation, Ambassadors and diplomats, Andris Ķesteris, President of Latvian National Federation in Canada, Peace Latvian Lutheran Church Rev. Ilmārs Zvirgzds and members of Latvian community of Ottawa.
