Welcome to the website of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Latvia to the UN in New York!
The United Nations was the first international organization that Latvia joined just after regaining our independence – on 17 September 1991. Since then the Mission has been working to advance the interests of Latvia in this global body. The Mission played its part in advancing the withdrawal of troops of the Russian Federation in the 1990ies; we attracted UN expertise to the reforms in Latvia; subsequently we started sharing Latvia’s experience of democratic transformation with other member states of the UN.
Latvia is an active member of the United Nations that voices its position on the topical issues of the global agenda. The Permanent Mission is particularly active in the areas where Latvia’s success has been particularly remarkable – human rights, gender equality, rule of law, information society, - and we work to include these topics in the work of the United Nations. We also use the opportunities of contacts in New York to maintain links with regions of the world that are far away from Latvia, both to advance our bilateral agenda and to exchange views on the UN agenda.
I hope that you will find on our website information that will help you better understand Latvia’s engagement in the work of the United Nations!
