Speech by Representative of Latvia to UNESCO Sanita Pavļuta – Deslandes after vote at sitting of Executive Committee on 5 October 2011
Latvia – Explanation of vote on Palestine admission to UNESCO
I would like to take this opportunity to explain Latvia`s vote on this agenda item.
Let me emphasize that Latvia fully supports two state solution and we hope to see a Palestinian state living in peace with the State of Israel. Latvia is not against Palestine becoming a member of UNESCO however we consider that there is a logical sequence of events. We believe that this long-standing wish of Palestinians to become a member of UNESCO was not coming at a right moment.
We respect the application of Palestine for a full membership in the UN that subsequently would give Palestine the right to become a member of UNESCO. We believe this question should first be decided in New York, and the UN Security Council is examining it now.
At the same time we believe that we should not take any steps that could undermine the Quartet activities and the process in New York.
UNESCO is a specialized UN agency and its work should not be politicized.
Thank you Madam Chair!
